讲座内容(lecture abstract):
Due to China’s political situation in the
second half of the 20th century,globalization processes started to
change the country since DengXiaoping’s open door policy only. However, since the 1990ies,
the whole gamut of globalization processes is rapidly influencing
the country, in particular,but not only, the coastal cities.
My presentation will focus on some topics
that are typical for a geographical approach in Urban and Economic
Geography: Starting from the influential ‘Global Cities’ theory’ and
going on to what is called ‘Urban Transnationalism’, I will try to
make clear that globalization is not only economic, but that there
is kind of ‘every day globalization’ with impacts in a variety of
fields and actors that are completely overlooked or underestimated
in current approaches. With the case of Guangzhou I will in
particular focus on the phenomenon of African traders.
